Would-be ganja trafficker gets three years, $4.7M fine

A decision to sell marijuana due to financial difficulties ended in tears yesterday for a Berbice man, who was sentenced to three years in jail and fined almost $5 million.

Georgetown Magistrate Leron Daly handed down the sentence and fine to Quincy Bowry, 34, after he admitted to being in possession of 3.143 kilogrammes (or 6.9 pounds) of cannabis for trafficking, on April 5th, at Square of the Revolution.

Bowry, a Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) Field Assistant, cried bitter tears and told the court how sorry he was for what he did. According to him, he was experiencing financial difficulties. He related that he was always told about the drug but never wanted to take it up because he didn’t want to get himself into any trouble.

The prosecution stated that police, acting on information, found Bowry in a car, where a search was conducted. A bag in Bowry’s possession was found containing the drugs. It was noted that Bowry wrote his own statement, in which he confessed to the crime.

After hearing the prosecution’s submissions, Magistrate Daly sentenced and fined Bowry.
