Happy Acres woman dies after suspected hit and run

A Happy Acres, East Coast Demerara (ECD) woman is now dead after she was struck down by a car on Sunday night and police are hunting for the driver who fled the scene.

Stabroek News gathered at around 11 pm, Corneille “Nelle” Grimmond, 23, of Lot 6 Happy Acres, ECD, was on the public road when she was struck down.

Police in a release said Grimmond, also of New Amsterdam, Berbice, “was found almost lifeless with multiple injuries consistent with that of a motor vehicular accident, on the Happy Acres Public Road.”

Police said a Professional Guard Service driver saw Grimmond on the northern side of the road panting for breath and stopped. He and two others and rendered assistance.

The injured Grimmond was placed in their vehicle and rushed to the George-town Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigators have retrieved several pieces of a broken vehicle mirror at the scene and Grimmond was found about 70 feet from the debris. Several statements have been obtained, the police said.

Meanwhile, when Stabroek News contacted an aunt, Tracy Romalho, she said the family is baffled at the death and is seeking answers.

She stated that the news has torn the hearts of family members.
