Essequibo Coast woman survives chopping attack by ex

Walton Hall, Essequibo Coast resident Melissa Durga is currently hospitalised after being chopped about the body by her former partner, who was also admitted to the hospital after reportedly ingesting poison.

Although Durga and her attacker are no longer together, she had visited the home to spend time with her children during the Easter holidays. According to Durga’s daughter, Alicia, the 36-year-old woman had been sleeping downstairs in the room with her children when the attack occurred.

She stated that her mother had woken up around 12 to find the man standing over her, staring, but had thought nothing of it at the time. Sometime after, around 4 am, the attack occurred.

Alicia recounted waking up to loud screams and blood, and found the man firing chops about her mother’s body. Durga was chopped to the face and hand and sustained lacerations to her back. Alicia stated that she, along with her siblings and Durga eventually ran from the house and sought help from the assailant’s aunt, who lives nearby.

They proceeded to the police station first, and then to the hospital, where the woman sought medical attention.

Her attacker was said to also still be hospitalized.
