Welder gets 24 months for stealing aunt’s savings

“Temptation took me,” was the excuse given by welder Lalchand Wilson, prior to him being sentenced to 24 months in jail yesterday for stealing his aunt’s savings.

The charge against Wilson stated that on March 11, at Lot 56 Campbellville Housing Scheme, he stole $120,000, which was the property of Geeta Ousman.

According to the prosecutor, Wilson was invited to stay at his aunt’s home in January since she lived alone. The prosecutor noted that the complainant would save money from her salary and keep it in her home. However, on March 11, when she checked where she usually placed her funds, she found her money missing. Wilson, according, to the prosecutor, admitted to stealing the money.

Wilson, who stated that he was charged seven years ago with a similar offence but was fined, told the court that he is not a thief. “Thou shalt not steal,” Magistrate Latchman told Wilson, before adding that he bit the hand that fed him. He was then sentenced to 24 months in jail.
