Former murder accused charged over $9M Princess Casino robbery

Former murder accused Jamil Charles was on Friday charged in a city court with last year’s $9 million Princess Casino last year.,

It was alleged that Charles on April 29, 2016, at Providence, East Bank Demerara, robbed cashiers of $8,951,000, which was the property of the Princess Casino.

Charles, who was read the charge by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, was not required to enter a plea and he was later remanded to prison until May 8.

Three men, Wayne Griffith, Junior Stewart and Andrew Blackman, have been charged with the crime.

Meanwhile, Charles was also brought before Magistrate Judy Latchman to face another robbery charge last Friday. It was alleged that on August 12, 2016, at Lot 33 Robb Street, Orange Walk, Bourda, while armed with a gun, he robbed a woman of $900,000 and a Bank of Guyana cheque, which were the property of Sudesh Persaud.

Charles denied the charge.

Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves objected to bail being granted based on the seriousness of the offence and its prevalence. He further noted that the defendant was positively identified and admitted in an oral statement to the crime.

Charles told the court that he did not rob anyone since he was only recently released from jail after being charged with murder.

Magistrate Latchman later remanded Charles and adjourned the matter to May 15.

Charles was previously charged with the murder of Randy Persaud but was discharged by Magistrate Dylon Bess after a prima facie case was not established against him.
