Two in custody over bread seller’s murder

As the police continue to probe the murder of Sophia bread vendor, Andre Alexander, a second person has been arrested after he was allegedly seen in the company of the soldier – who is suspected of involvement – before the crime was committed.

Stabroek News was told that the teenager was taken into custody on Monday evening, shortly after the soldier was arrested in Georgetown. They both remain in custody as the hunt continues for the alleged triggerman.

Andre Alexander

Alexander, known as ‘Alex’ and ‘Bread Man,’ 42, a father of two of Lot 394 Section C, Sophia, succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Friday night, hours after he was shot once to his stomach by one of two bandits, who posed as customers and held him at gunpoint.

Two men on a motorcycle pulled up in front of Alexander’s stall in Sophia and requested three loaves of bread.

As he was making change for the $5,000 bill the men used to pay him, they held him at gunpoint and demanded he hand over his cash.

The police, in a press release, had said that Alexander refused and was shot. The suspects then relieved him of his cash and they escaped on the motorcycle, discharging several rounds in the process. The man being sought by police is suspected to have been the pillion rider at the time of the attack.

Beverly Best-Alexander, the victim’s wife, was assisting him in the shop when the attack occurred but she managed to escape.
