‘Rastaman’ chopped to death at Mahdia mining camp

A 56-year-old miner was brutally chopped to death between Friday evening and yesterday morning, allegedly by his co-worker who also robbed him of two gold mats at the camp he was guarding at Potaro River. Damon Scipio called “Rastaman” of Moco Moco Village, Central Rupununi sustained three chop wounds one of which almost severed his wrist. He was taken to the Mahdia Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident occurred between 11 pm Friday and 6 am yesterday at the BK Old Road Backdam, Potaro River. The suspect who has been identified by the police only as “Buck”, a 26-year-old miner remained on the run up to yesterday afternoon. The police said stringent efforts are being made to apprehend him.

According to a police press release, investigations so far revealed that Scipio was guarding a sluice box with two gold mats, when he was fatally chopped. The gold mats, the police said, have been stolen.

Scipio was employed by a small-scale mining company at 111 Miles, Mahdia. At the time of the attack, he was guarding the company watch camp.

His body is currently at the Mahdia Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
