Neville Chandrawattie, who was charged with the 2007 murder of gold and diamond dealer Dharam Chanmangra during a robbery, was yesterday committed to stand trial for the crime.
Chandrawattie, called ‘Sunil,’ and others are alleged to have planned and carried out the attack on the El Dorado Trading Company in Port Kaituma on April 21, 2007, during which Chanmangra was shot in the chest and cash and a quantity of gold were stolen.
At the conclusion of the preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the charge, Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday found that there was sufficient evidence to have Chandrawattie stand trial at the High court. He was then committed to stand trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
Attorney Glenn Hanoman served as the special prosecutor during the PI, which had to be reopened for evidence from police inspectors Prem Narine and Troy Whittaker.
