Mahaica housewife charged with attempting to bribe cop

A Mahaica, East Coast Demerara housewife was last week placed on bail after being charged with attempting to bribe a police officer on May 20 following the arrest of her husband.

The woman Sabita Nandrine Khemraj, 40, of No.1 Helena, Mahaica, ECD, appeared before Magistrate Wanda Fortune in the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court on May 23.

According to the facts of the case, ranks from the Mahaica Police Station visited the home and found an illegal gun and a quantity of ammunition which led to the arrest of her husband Dhanram Salikram.

The police say that Khemraj then went to the police station and offered a bribe of $525,000 for the charges to be dropped and the release of her husband.

After she allegedly offered the money, she was arrested and told of the offence committed.

Salikram was charged and appeared before Magistrate Fortune on the same day.  He was remanded on the charge of illegal possession of a gun and ammunition.

They are both expected to return to court on the 21st of July.
