Bartica domestic worker remanded over one gramme of cocaine

A domestic worker was yesterday remanded to prison, after she denied being in possession of one gramme of cocaine.

Forty-seven-year-old Hazel Smith, was read a charge which stated that she, on May 30, at Bartica Arcade, Essequibo River, had one gramme of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.

After the charge was read by Magistrate Judy Latchman, Smith pleaded not guilty.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Shellon Daniels objected to bail being granted, noting that no special reason was presented by the defendant.

As a result, Smith, of 147 Seven Avenue, Bartica was remanded to prison and will appear before the Chief Magistrate today, when the matter is expected to be transferred.
