Remand, $30,000 bail for break and enter duo

Two men, accused of breaking into a home and stealing $200,000 worth of items, were charged with the offence yesterday.

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the charge to Alex Marks, 19 and Burnsley Bentham, 25, which stated that the two, between May 25 and May 26, broke and entered the dwelling house of Shondell St Jules, and stole a laptop, a Samsung Galaxy S5 cell phone, a Blu cell phone and a pair of slippers. The items had a total value of $200,000.

According to Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore, most of the stolen items were recovered at Marks’ home, but the pair of slippers was not found.

The prosecutor objected to bail being granted to both defendants, stating that Marks has a similar matter at the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court, and that Bentham, if granted bail, would not return to court.

Chief Magistrate McLennan, however, granted Bentham $30,000 bail, and remanded Marks to jail.

The duo will make their next court appearance on August 8 at the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
