Vagrant held after Springlands man, 88, fatally beaten

Police have detained a thirty year old man who is said to be of no fixed place of abode, in connection with the death of pensioner Fitzherbert Grimes, 88 years, of Hazel Street, Springlands, Corriverton, Berbice, who died several hours after being admitted a patient at the Skeldon Public Hospital yesterday.

A statement today from the police said he was taken there by the police, with a lacerated wound to his mouth and swollen eyes, about 13:30h.

Investigation revealed that the suspect who is a frequent visitor of the victim, went to the victim’s home, located at the upper flat of the house, shortly after 1 pm  yesterday and minutes later, the victim was heard screaming. The police who were alerted, responded promptly and caught the suspect in the process of exiting the yard. Has since confessed to beating the victim because of his (victim’s) refusal to give him some money.

The body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
