Miner on $200,000 bail over theft of $150,000

A miner was yesterday granted bail after he was accused of stealing $150,000 from his employer, moments after asking for a drink of water.

It is alleged that Ray Reid, 39, on June 11, at 111 Miles Mahdia, Potaro River, stole $150,000, property of Parsram.

Not guilty was the plea entered by the accused for the charge.

Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves, who made no objection to bail being granted, told the court that on the day in question the complainant, who is a dredge owner left the money on his table and went to speak to his general manager. Moments later, Reid asked the complainant for a drink of water and was granted permission to go into the house. Sometime after, Reid was seen running out of the house and when Parsram checked, the money was gone. The matter was reported and the defendant later arrested.

The prosecutor further stated that Reid took officers to the Roger Hinds Gas Station where $39,000 was recovered in an old engine.

Magistrate Judy Latchman later granted the defendant $200,000 bail and adjourned the matter to June 27.
