Sailor dies in hit-and-run at Orangestein

A sailor on a fishing vessel lost his life after he was involved in a hit-and-run accident at Orangestein, East Bank Essequibo just after 11 pm yesterday.

The man, known only as ‘Tony’ of Canal Number 2 Polder, West Bank Demerara, was said to be in his 30s.

He was employed with Jagdeshwar Andrew, who owns the vessel. The accident occurred close to Andrew’s home.

When Stabroek News arrived at the scene the police were already there. The body of the man, clad only in a pair of shorts, was lying face down on the road diagonally. He sustained severe injuries to the head.

Reports are that an off-duty police officer was passing and saw the body and alerted Andrew and other neighbours  Andrew told Stabroek News that he was fast asleep when he heard the call and ran out to investigate.

He was not sure what the man was doing on the road but other neighbours said he was consuming alcohol earlier.
