Bagotstown resident gets three years for 103 g of cannabis

“Call my mother and ask her to tell my children that I love them,” were the words spoken by a 25-year-old man yesterday, after he was sentenced to three years in jail for cannabis possession.

Carlsdale Aaron, of 180, Norton Street, Bagotstown, was read a charge which stated that he, on June 26, at John Street, Werk-en-Rust, had 102 grammes of cannabis in his possession for trafficking.

Aaron, a father of two, pleaded guilty to the crime after the charge was read by Magistrate Fabayo Azore.

According to the prosecutor’s facts, on the day in question, the defendant was seen standing at the corner of John Street, with a black bag and acting in a suspicious manner.

A mobile police patrol was called, and upon seeing the vehicle, the defendant dropped the bag and ran. He was later arrested and the bag searched, leading to the discovery of the drugs.

When asked by the Magistrate, if what the prosecutor said was true, the defendant answered in the affirmative.

The defendant then stated that he knows what he did was wrong, but he has been looking for a job and was unable to get one. He added that he didn’t want to ‘thief’ but needed money to care for his family and decided to ‘try a thing with the drugs’.

An emotional Aaron told the court that he did not want his children to be taken away from him, and is really sorry for not following the law.

Aaron was then sentenced to three years for the crime and fined $153,000.
