A truck driver was yesterday sentenced to a year in jail for causing the death of an elderly woman at Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara last year.

Georgetown Magistrate Fabayo Azore handed down the sentence to Zafar Khan at the conclusion of his trial for causing the death of 82-year-old Keturah Dalgetty.

It was alleged that on May 3, 2016, at Fifth Street, Section ‘A,’ Block ‘Y,’ Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, Khan drove GFF 9553 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Dalgetty.

It was the police’s case that Khan was reversing his vehicle on the road when he hit Dalgetty, who fell and he rolled over her. When the driver realised what had happened, he placed the woman in a taxi and took her to the Diamond Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The matter was prosecuted by Assistant Superintendent of Police Stephen Telford.
