A businessman was yesterday granted his release on $80,000 bail after he was charged with unlawfully wounding his common-law wife, who is currently hospitalised in a critical condition.
Myrtlon McKenzie, 52, was, however, told by Magistrate Judy Latchman to stay away from his wife, Andrea Brummell, pending the outcome of the matter.
The charge against McKenzie, who sells secondhand motorcycles, stated that on July 6, at North East La Penitence, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Brummell.
Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves requested that the McKenzie not be asked to plea since Brummell is a patient at the Woodlands Hospital and is slated to undergo surgery.
The prosecutor then objected to bail being granted given the woman’s current state.
The medical certificate shown to the court revealed that Brummell sustained three puncture wounds to her right thigh and her buttocks.
McKenzie’s attorney told the court that his client also received injuries to his head and his hands, which were inflicted by Brummell.
Despite the objection raised by the prosecutor, Magistrate Latchman granted the accused bail and adjourned the proceedings until July 24.
