Body of 80-year-old man pulled from Vergenoegen trench

The body of an elderly man was yesterday afternoon pulled from a trench at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).

Commander of ‘D’ Division Leslie James confirmed the discovery which was made around 3pm by passers-by.

The dead man has been identified as 80-year-old Herman Benjamin. While there were no visible marks of violence on his body, the police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine how he met his demise.

According to reports reaching Stabroek News, Benjamin attempted to cross a bridge when he fell into the trench. At the time he was reportedly under the influence of alcohol.

The dead man left home yesterday to uplift his pension and was returning when he met his demise.
