Girlfriend of escaped teen, two others still in custody

The girlfriend of Melvor Jeffrey, the teen who was recaptured by the police after he had escaped from lawful custody while under guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), is said to be one of the two women held by the police in connection with harbouring the fugitive.

The two women and a man were arrested when Jeffrey was recaptured by the lawmen in Brutus Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara, on Sunday morning.

Eighteen-year-old Jeffrey of Kaneville and Agricola, a mason, was in custody following a police operation in Agricola, on July 11. He was allegedly held in connection with discharging a loaded firearm at the police. According to a police source, the teen was allegedly found with a sawn-off shotgun in his possession, during his arrest.

Jeffrey was shot several times allegedly by the police during the operation and was taken to the GPHC where he remained a patient until he escaped around 2 am on July 19. Stabroek News understands that the youth escaped from the hospital after noticing that the policeman guarding him was not at his post.

Stabroek News has learnt that the girlfriend and her two friends were still in police custody assisting in investigations up to press time yesterday.

Meanwhile, Command-er of ‘A’ Division Marlon Chapman has informed Stabroek News that Jeffrey is back at the GPH under heavy guard.

According to relatives, when Jeffrey was first apprehended by the police in Agricola, he was visiting his girlfriend. The relatives, who said they had not heard from the girlfriend following Jeffrey’s arrest or his escape, stated that they “feel better” knowing that he is back at the medical institution. However, they said that he has relapsed and the reason for this setback was that he was “taken to a place where he did not receive any medical care.”
