Berbice man charged with giving false info to cops

A Berbice man was yesterday granted his release on $15,000 bail after denying giving false information to the police.

It was alleged that Mark Anthony, 35, of 56 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, on July 23, at Ruimveldt Police Station, Georgetown, told an officer that he was Justin Tony Chase, although he knew the information to be false.

Anthony pleaded not guilty after the charge was read by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.

Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore objected to bail while citing the nature of the offence. He also noted that Antony had a previous brush with the law as he was found with narcotics. Moore told the court that the accused had collided with the police vehicle and subsequently sought to get rid of a suitcase he had in his vehicle. Narcotics were found in the suitcase.

Despite the objection, Chief Magistrate McLennan later granted Anthony his release on $15,000 bail and adjourned the matter until September 14.
