Body of Linden woman recovered in Demerara River

The body of 19-year-old Esther Weekes was yesterday pulled out of the Demerara River, two days after she went under the water while trying to help a relative who fell in.

Weekes, of Lot 14 Burnham Drive, Wismar, Linden, was in the company of an aunt and younger cousin when the incident occurred. The lad reportedly slipped into the water and it was in an effort to assist him that she went under.

According to reports, while her cousin managed to make it to shore safely, Weekes was not as fortunate.  The police in Linden subsequently launched a search and it was only late yesterday that the teen’s body was pulled out of the river in the vicinity of the Titanic boat landing.

Efforts to contact Weekes’ relatives proved futile yesterday.
