Corentyne siblings charged over 25-lb ganja bust

A youth and his sister, of Number 51 Village, Corentyne, were yesterday remanded to prison for trafficking almost 25 pounds of marijuana, which police recovered on Saturday.

Roydel Williams, 18, a labourer, and his older sister, Rushana Ramalho, 23, a housewife, were charged with the possession of 11 kilogrammes (24.25 pounds) of cannabis for trafficking, when they appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.

Magistrate Charlyn Artiga refused bail for the unrepresented siblings, who will return to court on August 23 at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court.

Around 7 pm on Saturday, police carried out a search at Lot 100 Number 51 Village, Corentyne, where they discovered two males carrying a bulky, black plastic bag and a green rice bag at the back of the heavily fenced yard.

Police upon noticing the men, who were acting in a suspicious manner, immediately gave chase, which led to one of the men making good his escape, while Williams, the other, was placed under arrest.

The police then searched the rice bag and found 10 parcels, while the plastic bag contained 12 parcels. All the parcels, which were neatly wrapped with transparent plastic, contained marijuana.

Ramalho, who is said to have been residing on the premises, was also arrested on the same evening.
