Mentally ill man gets three months for cutting mother’s throat

A mentally ill man was yesterday sentenced to three months in jail and ordered to continue psychiatric treatment, after he cut his mother’s throat with a broken drinking glass.

Timothy Johnson, 26, was accused of wounding Harriel Johnson on August 3, at 1936 Cummings Street.

Timothy Johnson, after much prompting from Magistrate Fabayo Azore, pleaded guilty to the crime.

The prosecutor then told the court that on the day in question, the complainant had a glass of water over her door and when the defendant pushed the door open, the glass broke. He then picked up a piece of the broken glass and began to cut his mother’s neck whilst telling her that he would kill her. The prosecutor added that the accused then went into his room, and his mother proceeded to the East La Penitence Police Station and reported the matter, causing the accused to be arrested.

Timothy Johnson, who had brief moments of clarity, was able to tell the court that he worked at the ‘Back Road’ bus park loading passengers.

When asked if what the prosecution had stated was true, the accused told the court that he did cut his mother’s throat.

Magistrate Azore noted that the accused needs help and before sentencing him, ordered that he continue to attend his sessions with Dr. Bhiro Harry and take his medications.
