Pedestrian killed in Soesdyke crash

An unidentified male was killed early yesterday morning along the Soesdyke roadway, after a vehicle, driven by a police constable collided with  him.

The Guyana Police Force in a press release stated that about 3 am yesterday, along the Soesdyke Public Road, East Bank Demerara, motor car PPP 8497, which was being driven by a police constable, collided with the pedestrian.

According to the release, at the time of the accident the police constable was transporting Constable Gavin Gentle, who sustained injuries after losing control of motor car PTT 5444, and crashing into a utility pole, around 2:30 am, on the Timehri Public Road, to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.

The vehicle, with the injured constable, was being escorted by a police vehicle with its siren and lights flashing, when, according to the release, the driver swerved from the pedestrian who was in the centre of the road, but still hit him.

The now deceased man was picked up and placed in the vehicle and taken to the Diamond, East Bank Demerara Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of PPP 8497 was tested and no alcohol was detected in his breath.

Gentle, who is stationed at the Bartica Police Station, was treated and transferred to a private hospital.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
