Meadow Bank man on $100,000 bail for alleged cellphone theft

A man was yesterday granted bail of $100,000 after he was charged with stealing a cellphone.

Jonathan Mohammed, 26, of Lot 22 Meadow Bank, La Penitence, yesterday stood before Magistrate Judy Latchman and was read a charge which stated that on August 17, at Middle Road, East La Penitence, he stole one iPhone S6 plus cellphone, valued at $220,000, from Rupert Singh.

Mohammed entered a not guilty plea.

Police Prosecutor Corporal Shawn Gonsalves told the court that he had no objections to the accused being granted bail.

According to the prosecution’s facts, on the day in question, the complainant was walking on Middle Road, when the second accused approached him to have a conversation, when the first accused snatched his phone and made good way his escape. An alarm was raised and the matter was reported.

The accused was later arrested and the item was subsequently recovered.

Magistrate Latchman granted Mohammed his release on $100,000 bail, while the matter is adjourned until September 11.
