Man stole phone after borrowing it to make call

North Sophia resident Derwayne Singh found himself facing a simple larceny charge last Friday, after he was accused of making off with a phone that he borrowed to make a call.

It is alleged that Singh, 25, of Lot 130 Downer Canal, North Sophia, stole a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, valued at $95,000, from Gavin Thomas on August 21, at Merriman Mall, Bourda.

Singh pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him by Magistrate Judy Latchman in Georgetown.

Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves had no objections to the accused being granted bail.

According to the prosecution’s case, Singh went to Thomas’ shop at the Merriman Mall, where he asked to borrow his cellphone to make a call. It is alleged that Singh then fled with the phone. As a result, the theft was reported and the accused was later arrested.

Magistrate Latchman subsequently granted Singh his release on $60,000 bail and the proceedings were adjourned until September 15.
