A fisherman was yesterday charged with allegedly stealing from a woman who got stuck in a traffic jam.

Harshad Ally was accused of stealing an $8,000 bag, a $5,000 purse and $7,000 cash from Nikita Cameron-Cole, on August 3, at Regent and Alexander streets.

Ally, 29, of Mon Repos, denied the charge after it was read to him in a Georgetown court.

Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh told the court that on the day of the incident, Cameron-Cole was sitting in her car, which was stopped in traffic, when she was approached by Ally from behind. He allegedly snatched the bag from the backseat. According to the prosecutor, he then made good his escape on foot.

The prosecutor noted that the defendant was positively identified by Cameron-Cole and arrested.

Magistrate Judy Latchman subsequently, granted Ally his release $60,000 bail and adjourned the matter to today, when it will be heard by Magistrate Annette Singh.
