A police constable, who was said to be returning from a test ride of a police force motorcycle at the time of his death, was reportedly speeding and without helmet when the accident occurred on the Unity Old Road on Saturday night.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.

Elroy Newton, 37, of 70 Voorsigtigheid, Mahaica, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital, after a failed attempt at a turn caused him to fall onto the road and sustain injuries.

The accident reportedly occurred around 7.30 pm.

It was stated that Newton had left the Transport workshop at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, where he was stationed, earlier in the day and had been riding force motorcycle CE 4555.

According to a police press release, Newton had been proceeding north along the road, and had been in the process of “negotiating a sharp turn” when he lost control of the motorcycle and fell. It was noted that Newton had not only been proceeding at a fast rate, but had also not been wearing a helmet at the time the accident occurred.

The man’s wife, Thandy Newton, when contacted yesterday, was not in the state to offer a comment. Newton leaves to mourn his wife and one child.
