Driver held after body of pedestrian found at Meten-meer-Zorg

A driver was yesterday afternoon arrested, hours after he struck down and killed an elderly pedestrian whose body was found in a shallow drain along the Meten-meer-Zorg Public Road, West Coast Demerara.

Dead is Mohamed Yussuff Ashraff, 61 of Lot 155 East Meten-meer-Zorg, WCD.

The accident occurred early yesterday morning and Ashraff body was discovered in a shallow drain about 9am yesterday.

He sustained head injuries and was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police said, based on information received, the 26-year-old driver, a resident of Seafield Leonora, was arrested around 2 pm yesterday.

The driver, the statement said related to investigators that at about 4 am yesterday, he was proceeding in motor car, PMM 321 east along the northern carriageway of the public road when the vehicle suddenly veered and struck down an object but failed to stop.

A driver was subjected to a breathalyzer test which revealed that he had no alcohol on his breath.

He is presently in custody assisting with investigations.

Ashraff body is currently at the Ezekiel Funeral home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
