Man admits to killing stepsister, teenage nephew at Moblissa

For killing his stepsister and nephew back in 2013, Orin Rodrigues yesterday morning copped to charges of manslaughter, when he appeared at the High Court  in Georgetown.

Initially indicted for murder, Rodrigues, 24, through his attorney Maxwell McKay, indicated to the court that he wanted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter, which was accepted by the state.

He accepted that on November 30, 2013, at Moblissa, Linden Soesdyke-Highway, he unlawfully killed Molly James and her son, 15-year-old Aaron James.

Justice Brassington Reynolds, before whom the matter was called, has deferred sentencing to October 26, to facilitate the presentation of a probation report.

The state’s case against Rodrigues, which he did not dispute, is that a 13-year-old girl had complained to Molly of him allegedly raping her.

According to prosecutors, after the woman reported the alleged sexual assault to the police, an enraged Rodrigues went to her home at 12.30 am on November 30 armed with a knife. Molly James and her family were asleep when Rodrigues entered the home and dealt her several stabs about her body. During the attack, Aaron went to his mother’s aid, only to be attacked as well. Rodrigues then made good his escape.

A day later, Rodrigues was apprehended in the area by the police.

Prosecutor Shawnettte Austin, in association with Lisa Cave and Tiffini Lyken, is representing the state in the case.
