Over 67 kilogrammes of suspected cocaine was uncovered hidden in sealed 45kg bags of rice intended for export to Belgium.
The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) today said that it and the Container Control Programme’s (CCP) operatives made the bust.
CANU in a release said that the raid began at the John Fernandes Limited Wharf on Water Street on Friday and the suspected cocaine was unearthed on Saturday just before midday.
CANU said that the exercise entailed the unloading and searching of five rice-filled, twenty-feet containers. The containers had been scheduled to leave Guyana on Friday. The broker responsible for the shipment has been taken into custody, the police said.
In addition to information printed in Dutch, the rice bags lists the producer as Golden Grains Investments of 111 Barr Street, Kitty.
