Sophia man fatally shot during row over girlfriend

A 24-year-old labourer died on Friday night after he was shot multiple times during a row over a woman in Sophia.

Dead is Jamal Munroe, of ‘C’ Field, Sophia.

Munroe, who sustained gunshot wounds to his legs, his lower back and his left hand, was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he succumbed while receiving medical attention.

The suspected shooter, who has been identified as a 19-year-old known as “Mark,” was still to be apprehended up to yesterday afternoon.

The shooting occurred along the ‘C’ Field Access Road, around 10.45 pm.

The police, in a press release, said initial investigations revealed that Munroe and the suspect had an argument over a 32-year-old shopkeeper, of ‘D’ Field, Sophia. During the argument, the suspect discharged several rounds at Munroe.

Sunday Stabroek was told that Munroe’s girlfriend was at the centre of the argument between him and his assailant, who became angry and reportedly whipped out a gun and fired several shots in his direction.

Munroe collapsed and was picked up by public-spirited citizens and transported to the hospital in an unconscious state. He later succumbed while receiving treatment.

Munroe’s relatives refused to comment on the shooting yesterday.
