Contractor robbed by bandits while paying workers

Armed bandits yesterday morning robbed a contractor at gunpoint as he was paying his employees at the Good Success koker, on the East Bank of Demerara.

The attack took place around 11.10am yesterday and the bandits escaped with over $300,000 in cash and jewellery.

A police source told Stabroek News that Ishrie Persaud, 45, of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara, visited the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) branch at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, where he withdrew $300,000.

He proceeded to the koker to pay his employees but upon his arrival he was confronted by two bandits, one of whom held him at gunpoint before relieving him of $200,000 in cash, two cell phones, a silver band and several important documents, including his ID and bank cards.

The gunman, who fled the scene in a silver car, discharged warning shots. No one was injured.

An investigation has been launched.
