Canadian citizen dies after vehicle careens off Manari bridge

A Canadian citizen died yesterday morning after the vehicle he was in plunged into the water below the Manari Trail bridge in Region Nine (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo).

The accident which occurred at approximately 3.10 yesterday morning claimed the life of Brandis Kennedy, 87, and has left Anthony Pellew, 32, the driver, hospitalised.

Police in a statement said Pellew of Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara, was driving a motor pickup bearing registration number PKK 6060 when he lost control and drove off the Manari Bridge.

“Investigation revealed that the vehicle was proceeding east along the trail and was crossing the Manari Bridge when the driver lost control and drove off the bridge and ended up about 30 feet below”.

The statement said that Kennedy and Pellew were removed from the vehicle by passers-by and taken to the Lethem Hospital.

At the hospital, Kennedy was pronounced dead on arrival and his body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination while Pellew was treated for abrasions and admitted.
