The state of the recently started works on the main access bridge afor Mocha/Arcadia at Nelson Street.

Reconstruction of the main bridge to Mocha/Arcadia has started and workers are aiming to have it completed by the end of the year.

The bridge is currently being rebuilt by contractor Ivor Allen at a cost of $10.7 million. The works, which began last week, fall under the supervision of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MPI) and the Mocha/Arcadia Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC).

During a visit to the area yesterday, Stabroek News observed works being carried out. The old structure was removed and concrete columns were cast.

The bridge, located at Nelson Street, has been closed to vehicular traffic for at least five months.

Residents yesterday said that they were happy that construction has finally started as they noted that the closure of the bridge has been an inconvenience to them.

During the closure, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists still used the bridge.

During a community outreach in November, Junior Minister of Public Infrastructure Annette Ferguson had told residents that rehabilitation of the other bridge current being used to access the community should be undertaken in 2018.
