Mechanic fined over theft of tablet

A young mechanic was yesterday fined $80,000 over the theft of a tablet, which he confessed to stealing.

Dwayne Williams, 20, was yesterday charged in a Georgetown court with stealing the Amazon device on November 19th at Toucan Drive, South Ruimveldt. The tablet, valued $80,000, was the property of Stacy Benjamin.

Williams pleaded guilty to the charge and the police prosecutor told the court that around 8.45 pm on the night of the theft, Benjamin had placed the tablet on her bed in her bedroom. Williams, the prosecutor added, pushed his hand through her window and took the tablet. Benjamin made a report to the East La Penitence Police Station and Williams was contacted by the police and admitted to removing the tablet. He also took the police to a place where tablets are sold.

When the magistrate asked Williams why he took the tablet, he responded, “I don’t know.”

Magistrate Judy Latchman subsequently fined him $80,000 or an alternative of three months in jail.
