(Jamaica Gleaner) South Jamaica Power Company, a subsidiary of the Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS), is to spend US$330 million to construct a 190 megawatt power plant in Old Harbour Bay, St Catherine.
The company on Wednesday signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract with Spanish contracting firm TSK to build the plant by early 2019.
South Jamaica Power Company General Manager Dan Theoc, says the new power plant would facilitate the addition of more natural gas to the company’s fuel mix.
According to Theoc, the plant will be even more significant to the energy landscape.
He says the 190 megawatt facility will not only facilitate fuel diversification with a cleaner fuel but will also allow the JPS to retire its ageing plant in Old Harbour Bay.
JPS President & CEO, Kelly Tomblin, says the light and power company remains on a mission to find an energy solution for every Jamaican, with the focus on economic development, fuel diversity and an intelligent grid.
