Relief supplies head to BVI, more than 100 Jamaicans to be evacuated

(Jamaica Gleaner) About 125 Jamaicans are set to be evacuated from the hurricane-ravaged British Virgin Islands (BVI).

A release from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) yesterday says three aircraft left the island with relief supplies for the disaster-stricken BVI.

The ODPEM says the aircraft are to return with about 75 Jamaicans who have been living in BVI.

The disaster management agency says 50 more Jamaicans are to be evacuated today on the final mission to rescue nationals on the British territory that was decimated by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Last week, the government evacuated scores of Jamaicans from the BVI, as well as the Turks and Caicos Islands and St Martin which all sustained major damage from the hurricanes.
