Jamaica Elections Director Orrette Fisher seeking injunction to prevent removal from office

(Jamaica Gleaner) Director of Elections Orrette Fisher is now taking legal action to prevent the Electoral Commission of Jamaica from removing him from the job.

Fisher’s one-year appointment expires today and it is reported that the post is to be advertised on the expiration.

The elections boss is contending that his one-year appointment was illegal because the law clearly states that the appointment must be for seven years.

Fisher who is being represented by attorney-at-law Hugh Wildman has brought an action in the Supreme Court against Governor General Sir Patrick Allen and the Electoral Commission of Jamaica.

He is seeking an injunction to bar the Commission from removing him from the post. When the matter came before the Supreme Court this afternoon, Justice Carolyn Tai adjourned it until tomorrow and directed that the respondents be served.
