Suraj Singh, a father of seven, was yesterday remanded to prison by a city magistrate after he was accused of chopping his stepson, who was at the time attempting to save his mother from being wounded.
Singh, 52, is accused of unlawfully and maliciously wounding Eon Lewis on March 19, at Aranka Landing, Cuyuni River.
Singh denied the charge, which was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.
According to the prosecution, Lewis, who is the stepson of Singh, intervened when the man was abusing his wife and attempted to chop her. As a result, Lewis was chopped.
The prosecution objected to bail, while noting that if Singh were released, there may be a confrontation between him and his stepson.
Attorney Clyde Forde, who represented Singh, stated that the man was not a flight risk. Forde also noted that Singh was severely beaten by persons in the area.
Chief Magistrate McLennan later remanded Singh to prison and adjourned the matter to April 6, when it will be called at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
