Man charged with stealing $1.8M in jewellery from friend

A man was yesterday charged with stealing $1.8 million in jewellery from a friend after they went out partying.

Marlon Glen, 35, of Soesdyke, was read a charge which stated that on February 23, at Third Street, Alberttown, he stole a quantity of gold and diamond jewellery, valued at $1,800,000, which was the property of Kwame Williams.

He pleaded not guilty after the charge was read by Magistrate Judy Latchman.

Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves told the court that on the day of the robbery the complainant along with Glen went to a J’ouvert celebration, where they were drinking.

He said they later decided to take a taxi home and the defendant was dropped off first. It was afterward that Williams reportedly realised that his jewellery was missing and he made a report to police.

Gonsalves said Glen, upon being arrested, admitted to the police under caution that he had sold the jewellery.

“Officer, I done pawn them things already. I done sell them things underneath the clock,” Gonsalves reported him as saying.

Gonsalves, who noted that the investigation was completed, made no objection to Glen being released on bail.

Glen was later released on $200,000 bail and the matter was adjourned until April 24.
