Alvin Rudder, who was recently convicted for sexually abusing an eight-year-old girl, has been placed in solitary confinement after he was attacked on Sunday at the Camp Street Prison.
Rudder was sentenced to 10 years in prison last Thursday after being convicted on one of two counts of engaging in sexual activity with the child. Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels told Stabroek News that based on preliminary investigations it has been determined that Rudder was targeted because of the offence for which he was convicted.
According to Samuels, they have not be able to identify the perpetrators of the attack, but investigations are continuing “to see what additional information can be unearthed.”
Rudder was beaten and sustained wounds to his head. He received medical treatment before being placed in solitary confinement.
Samuels explained that while there are prisoners who are jailed for rape, some inmates take particular offence over the presence of those convicted for child rape and other sensitive crimes and target them.
He noted that while they have isolated Rudder, they do not have cells to isolate all prisoners convicted for such offences.
Rudder was convicted on a charge that stated that at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, he was involved in sexual activity with the child on April 9, 2012.
The jury’s verdict was by a proportion of 11 to 1 in favour of guilt on the first count. He was found not guilty on a second count.
“I never do it. I know nothing about it,” Rudder told the court before he was sentenced.
The prosecution’s case was that Rudder had rubbed his penis against the little girl’s genitals. He thereafter tied a rope around the child’s neck, attached it to the ceiling, and threatened to kill her if she told anyone about what had happened.
