Better Hope teen dies after allegedly hit by father

An 18-year-old labourer died on Friday, one day after he was allegedly struck in his head by his father during an argument at their Better Hope, East Coast Demerara home.

Dead is Azeez Khan, called ‘Orlando,’ of Lot 8 Better Hope. His father, who has been identified as Omar Khan, 40, a security guard, was subsequently arrested and he is likely to be charged soon. He has reportedly admitted to delivering the fatal blow.

The altercation between the men occurred around 7.30 am last Thursday. Azeez was subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted. He succumbed to his injuries on Friday.

A post-mortem examination that was conducted on Monday revealed that he died as a result of haemorrhage due to blunt trauma to the head.

According to a police press release, the father and son had an altercation during which Azeez was allegedly struck to his head with a piece of wood.

A report was made to the police, who were initially told that Azeez fell off a ladder at his place. However, following the post-mortem examination, a further investigation was conducted and the father reportedly confessed to the crime.

While the details of what led to the altercation are not clear, this newspaper was told that Azeez and his sister had an argument and their father intervened and struck Azeez in his head with a piece of wood.

When Stabroek News visited the dead youth’s home yesterday, relatives were tight-lipped about his death.
