Lodge woman charged over fake US notes

Lodge Housing Scheme resident Shellon Davis, who allegedly tried to pass off forged United States currency to another woman, yesterday faced three charges in a city court.

It is alleged that Davis, of 245 Lodge Housing Scheme, on June 21, at Georgetown, uttered six forged US$50 bills to Marcia Lowenfield. The accused was also charged with obtaining $60,000 from Lowenfield by falsely pretending that the six US$50 notes she exchanged were genuine. Davis was also charged with having the six forged US$50 notes without lawful authority or excuse.

The court of Magistrate Judy Latchman heard that on the day in question, Davis went to Lowenfield’s establishment to purchase a beer. While in the shop, she asked Lowenfield if she was able to change US$50 and the complainant did so.

It was then that Davis allegedly told Lowenfield that she had US$900 to change. However, Lowenfield was only able to change a portion of the funds and gave Davis $60,000. It was sometime after that Lowenfield discovered that the foreign currency she received from Davis was fake, causing her to make a report to the police.

Magistrate Latchman later granted Davis her release on $300,000 bail and adjourned the matter to July 17.
