Woman hospitalised after accidentally shot by husband

A 50-year-old woman is in hospital nursing a gunshot wound to her abdomen after she was accidentally shot by her husband while he was clearing his gun.

The injured woman has been identified as Ann Kurt, a housewife of Bougainvillea Park, East Bank Demerara.

She was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery and is said to be in a stable condition. Her husband, Paul Griffith, 60, a receptionist at a city hotel, was taken into custody and his licensed firearm and ammunition were lodged.

According to a police press release, the incident occurred around 02:30 hrs yesterday after the couple had returned from an outing.

“The victim went to the shower and on entering the bathroom she heard an explosion, followed by a burning sensation to her abdomen which began to bleed profusely,” the police said.

Her husband, according to the statement, who is a licensed firearm holder, said that he was clearing the weapon when it accidentally went off and injured Kurt.
