GPL shutdowns continue

The Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) yesterday reported two disruptions in service for customers served by the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS).

GPL said at approximately 1.40 am, the DBIS suffered an interruption in service due to a fault on the breaker of the F6 Feeder.

Restorative efforts, it added, commenced at 1.45 am and all affected customers were repowered by 4.59 am, with the exception of customers in ‘A’ to ‘E’ Fields, Sophia. GPL said the extended delay was due to replacement of the damaged switch gear and cleaning/refurbishment of the busbar and cubicle. Power was expected to be restored by last evening.

Meanwhile, at 10.11 am, GPL said the DBIS suffered a total shutdown due to a short circuit resulting from a defective switch on the F9 feeder at Water and Cowan streets, Kingston. Power was restored to all areas at 1. 45 pm.

GPL added that it is continuing to inject efforts towards achieving a “fault tolerant” network.

The utility company has been reeling from a series of shutdowns and members of the public have voiced increasing concern and frustration over the continued problem.
