Six Upper Corentyne men were remanded on Friday for invading a Number 69 Village boat owner’s house and robbing him of a quantity of cash and jewellery on August 5.
The men Mahendra Singh, also known as ‘Sunil’, 33, of Number 72 Village; Satyavan Bhawan, also known as ‘Blacka’, 45, a labourer of Number 76 Village; Haresh Kumar Rai also known as ‘Ryan’, 34, a security guard of Number 72 Village; Khemraj Singh, 27, a fisherman of Number 69 Village and Rabindra Kumar , 27, a hire car driver of Number 73 Village, Corentyne all appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
The men were jointly charged for robbery under arms carried out on Sachin Ramrattan of Number 69 Village, Corentyne.
Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh refused bail for the accused. They will return to court on August 24.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Kumar appeared at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with two counts of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, possession of ammunition without a licence and possession of a firearm without being the holder of a firearm licence.
Magistrate Singh refused bail for Kumar on those charges as well.
Kumar was found in his vehicle in close proximity to the boat owner’s house on the said night of the robbery. The man was also alleged to have had in his possession a small quantity of cannabis. Police also carried out a search on his premises after he was arrested and found an unlicensed shotgun, two spent shells and one live cartridge.
Two Saturdays ago, armed bandits launched an attack on Ramrattan’s house and carted off $1.2 million in jewellery, $200,000 in cash, and two electronic devices. In order to escape to safety, Ramrattan along with his heavily pregnant wife and four-year-old son jumped through a window. It was the second occasion in recent weeks that Corentyne robbery victims had jumped from a window to escape bandits.
