Suspected Sophia carjacker held after chase

A Sophia resident who tried to escape from police was yesterday morning arrested after he was chased on foot.

Police yesterday in a statement said the twenty-five-year-old South Turkeyen, Sophia resident was wanted for questioning in relation to a carjacking on July 28.

Stabroek News gathered that the man has admitted to committing the carjacking on that day from a bridge in Canal No.1, West Bank Demerara. Approxi-mately, two weeks after the car went missing, it was recovered on August 11 in D Field, Sophia.

Police said the suspect was seen in the possession of the motor car but managed to escape the police dragnet on August 11.

After being caught he was handed over to police in D division for questioning. He was caught some distance away from where he was seen by police.

The suspect is wanted for questioning in respect of several reports of carjacking on the East Coast of Demerara, police said yesterday.
