A police lance corporal is under close arrest after he struck down and killed a female pedestrian along the Ogle Public Road, East Coast Demerara on Sunday evening.
The accident occurred around 7.50 pm while the 39-year-old police officer, who is stationed at the Force Headquarters and hails from Cummings Lodge was driving his personal vehicle, PSS 3984.
The woman has since been identified as Anastasia Kerr, 20, a sales girl of Lot 5 Hope Estate, ECD.
Investigations, according to a press release have revealed that the rank was proceeding east on the southern side of the northern carriageway of the public road when the woman ran across from north to south into the path of the vehicle.
She was picked up in an unconscious state by the policeman and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where she died while receiving medical attention.
The police said that the rank who was proceeding within the stipulated speed limit at the time of the accident was found to be above the legal alcohol limit.
Investigations are ongoing.
