Essequibo fugitive remanded on series of charges

A 24-year-old man who managed to evade the police for the last three years is now the latest guest of the state after he was slapped with several charges when he appeared before Magistrate Esther Sam at the Charity Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Leon Price, who is unemployed and has no fixed place of abode  was charged with attempting to set fire to a building.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Wednesday 13th September, 2017 at Onderneeming Sand Pit.

Price allegedly lit a fire in an attempt to burn the home of Daniel Stoll.

He was also charged with causing  injury to trees. The police said that he on December 5th, 2016 at Onderneeming Sand Pit  destroyed two acres of produce valued $1.5 Million, property of Devendra Persaud.

The damaged crops included pepper, bora, papaw, tomatoes and watermelon.

Additionally, Price was  charged with simple larceny. The police said that between 4th December 2016 and 5th December 2016, he stole from Devendra Persaud two motor blowers valued $250,000 and one 2.5 Juice Horse Power Yamaha Outboard engine valued $175, 000. Price was also charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Danesh Singh on the 5th December, 2016.

Price was not represented in court by an attorney and pleaded not guilty to all the  charges read to him by Magistrate Sam.

Police Prosecutor Haimwant Ramsewak objected to bail stating that Price has no fixed place of abode, he was hiding from the police and that he is expected to be charged with more offences.

After taking the matter into consideration, bail  was refused and Price was remanded to prison until October 12th, 2017 when he is expected to appear at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court for statements to be served.
